FRANK OWUSU AND MICHAEL ABUAH ON OFF-CAMPUS SECURITY

FRANK OWUSU AND MICHAEL ABUAH ON SECURITY OFF CAMPUS

SRC PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS 21'

Both of these two SRC PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS, Michael Abuah and Frank Owusu have made statements on security off-campus. It seems that security off-campus is something they both are interested in. FRANK OWUSU and MICHAEL ABUAH might not be the only aspirants who have showed interest in off campus security but it is these two who are much more interested. Let's analyze what they have said about off campus security.

1.FRANK OWUSU-the first to speak on off-campus security

ON SECURITY

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

NO STUDENT SHOULD BE STABBED AND ROBBED!

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

 A FRANK OWUSU STATEMENT

We all came to school to study, to earn the knowledge, skills and the certificate to be able to make a living and contribute to society. We find ourselves in an academic environment in which the majority of students are found outside main campus. Students lives are mostly threatened especially during the exam periods.

Last semester, students were stabbed and robbed. Others almost raped. It was part of the reason my team and I took up the LIGHT UP initiative to help brighten the dark corners of off-campus.

But I want to believe the light up campaign wasn't enough, we still have to re-enforce the community watch dog group to help supplement the security efforts.

 Now here were the challenges I found as I met the head of security ;

1. The watch dog have fewer men. Fewer men means they are enough to have their eyes everywhere off-campus

2. They do not have enough security apparatus to aid them in discharging their duties

3. They patrol on foot. They don't have any vehicle for patrol.

4. They don't have a station where they can centre their operations and report to the TECH Police station.

5. They have not been activated for all the areas students are found.  Only the Bomso squad is effective as it stands.

I pledge my effort to fixing the security off-campus should I become the SRC President by

📍 Recruiting more people into the Watch dog group

📍 Providing security apparatus for the watch dog group

📍 Commit the Tech Police to increasing patrols

📍Securing a pick-up vehicle for them to ensure an effective work

📍Securing an operational center for them.

If some students aren't safe, then none of us are all safe. I am committed to your security, and should I have the opportunity as SRC President, I would make it my core mission to ensure your safety.

Your friend,

FRANK OWUSU

AS YOUR NEXT SRC PRESIDENT

KEEP MOVING

2.MICHAEL ABUAH- also on off campus security.

OFF CAMPUS LIVES MATTER; Michael ABUAH’S Take on SECURITY

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

We come to the University with the sole aim of developing our various potentials of growing up as citizens that will someday take charge of the affairs of our nation.

But in KNUST countless students have to deal with other troubles in addition to trying to grow themselves.

Campus security in KNUST is top great but same cannot be said for Off Campus.

There are no security posts, check points or even points of contacts when students are harmed. Yet still the SRC makes budget allocations for Security off campus.

To understand this plight we must go back to the Genesis. It is without unequivocal doubt that the school has an obligation to all its students. Ideally students need to be accommodated on campus but the logistics for this can only give a little above 15% out of a little above 70,000 students accommodation on campus.

This implies a huge chunk of students have to move outside the school to secure accommodation.

Aside facing the exorbitant hostel prices they are charged with they also have to deal with the terrible state of Security off Campus.

The question then becomes who is to fix this ?

Who is responsible for Student Safety Off campus?

We must all make a concession that the security tips and street lights are not enough to solve the problem.

The school has a direct obligation to make sure all Students are safe and can go about their normal academic duties.

The SRC should also be at the front spearheading students safety but all we see are budget allocations and nothing concrete being done.

All Lives of Students Matter whether On Campus or Off Campus. We need to start addressing this issue with the urgency it deserves and not the half baked solutions we keep getting.

I’m Michael Abuah and I believe Off Campus Lives Matter.

MICHAEL ABUAH ADOFO

SRC PRESIDENT HOPEFUL’21

FAITH TO FINISH.

These are the exact words of both of these SRC PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS on the same challenging issue which is OFF-CAMPUS SECURITY. What are the other aspirants saying??? Identifying the problem isn't enough, finding answers and giving out possible solutions are quite okay.

the question now is

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO SOLVE THE IDENTIFIED PROBLEM AND WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN GIVEN THE MANDATE???
